From Defeat to Summit: My Return to Gannett Peak | #wyoming

In July 2024, I came heartbreakingly close to summiting Gannett Peak — the highest mountain in Wyoming — only to be forced to turn back just a few hundred feet below the top. That failed attempt was a crushing blow, but it also sparked a year-long mission to return stronger, smarter, and ready to finish what I started. In late July 2025, I returned to the Wind River Range with my new climbing partners, Shane and Roger, to take on Gannett Peak once again. This time, we committed to a grueling six-day, 60-mile backpacking and mountaineering expedition via the stunning Glacier Trail outside Dubois, Wyoming. Along the way, we trekked deep into grizzly country, battled brutal switchbacks, forded raging creeks, and camped beside crystal-clear alpine lakes as we pushed farther into one of the most remote wilderness areas in the Lower 48. After establishing base camp beneath the towering walls of Gannett Peak, we carefully analyzed weather, terrain, and route options for our summit push.
