In 1918, under a new Bolshevik government the Russian army sued for peace, and ended there involvement in the war. This provided Germany with a huge boost in spare troops that could be redeployed to the western front. In fact the Germans now had one and a half times as many troops as the allies. But with America about to join the allies, the German advantage would not last long. The German officers decided to throw everything into one last make or break attack.
