Step inside the Dakota, one of New York City’s most iconic residential buildings, with interior designer Garrow Kedigian. Completed in 1884 at 1 West 72nd Street, the Dakota introduced a new standard of luxury living far north of the city’s then-core. Kedigian opens the tour by merging a former library with the living room, creating an expansive space where three chandeliers from Paris flea markets complement a seven-foot piano and a high-gloss ceiling. Blue velvet upholstery contrasts the warm wood tones of the original architecture, establishing a distinctive aesthetic that balances scale with comfort. The dining room reflects the same attention to proportion and detail. Soaring ceilings and original moldings frame organic wallpaper, while a table and chairs align with the room’s grand dimensions. Kedigian selected a high-gloss finish for the ceiling to enhance light and echo the living room’s bold palette. The kitchen demonstrates functionality alongside elegance. Cabinets reach the full height of the ceilings and require a ladder, while a central island supports both preparation and casual seating. A breakfast nook incorporates an antique onyx tabletop with built-in storage and a mid-century modern mirror sourced from Paris, providing a blend of funtionality and visual interest. Moreover, the lovely bedrooms prioritize scale and warmth. The primary suite features fourteen-foot ceilings, twelve-foot custom curtains, and a bed upholstered in rich mohair. Carpets in herringbone pattern complement the original floors, while a Mirano chandelier introduces a refined accent. A painted mantel softens the woodwork, completing a room that is light, inviting, and rooted in the building’s historical fabric. Overall, each element throughout this home reflects Garrow's approach to integrating color, texture, and form. Additionally, the Dakota’s luxe interior illustrates how careful selection of materials and finishes can celebrate history while serving current daily living needs.
