Nepal has a new interim leader. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, the country’s first and only female chief justice, has been confirmed as interim Prime Minister by the President’s office. The 73-year-old, known for her integrity and anti-corruption stance, will take oath at 8:45 pm local time. Her appointment comes after days of violent anti-graft protests that shook Nepal, leaving 51 people dead and more than 1,300 injured. The movement, largely driven by Gen Z protesters, forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign after his attempt to ban social media backfired. Karki’s elevation marks a historic moment for Nepal’s politics, as the protesters’ demands for an honest, clean leader have been met.
