To strengthen their bilateral response and cooperation against global cyber threats, the South Korean government will launch a special working group with the U.S. At a high-level interagency meeting on Friday... to review the nation's cybersecurity status,... the director of national security at the Blue House, Suh Hoon, along with vice-ministerial officials from 16 government offices, made the decision to take preemptive action... having observed ransomware attacks both in the country and overseas. A South Korea-U.S. cyber working group comes as a result of the agreement reached between President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Joe Biden during their summit in May... to enhance cyber security cooperation. The government says it will be actively responding to the diverse types of cyber threat as they are directly related to national security. Suh Hoon said that the continuous ransomware attacks require meticulous countermeasures from the government, especially as a reliance on information technology has increased due to COVID-19. The participants of the meeting evaluated the performance of major national cyber security strategies such as the establishment of national cyber threat information sharing system and the development of artificial intelligence-based detection technology. The National Intelligence Service reported that its going to unify the current cyber alert systems that are being managed separately by the military and the civilian and public sectors. The Ministry of Science and ICT will help small and medium sized businesses with a secure "data vault" as well as with expanded PC security services. And with the threat of advanced defense technology exposure increasing, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration says it will enhance its cyber security by carrying out diagnostics on potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities and by implementing the U.S. defense cybersecurity certification system. Suh Hoon urged the government officials in attendance to form the best security management system possible to guard high-tech defense technologies that are directly related to national security and infrastructure... as any attack could cause great inconvenience to people's lives.
