Ray Franz (& David A) on 1975 (part 3) -- JW's told no time to be "toying with the words of Jesus"
Had the Watchtower learned anything from its long history of prophetic miscalculations? What the Society learned in the decade before 1975 was that date-setting SELLS. Baptisms more than quadrupled in those 10 years. The total number of active JW's more than doubled, to a peak of over 2 million "publishers" and around 5 million attending at least some meetings. It is not surprising that Ray Franz reports the Governing Body was reluctant to "back off 1975" as the deadline approached. Who could argue -- Jehovah was blessing their "good news"?
