#geographybasics #geogbasics #geography In this video I am going to investigate the 7 continents of the world as well as the major oceans. Starting with Europe marked in grey in the Northern Hemisphere. Made up of 45 countries and includes Iceland and Greenland which are located to the North West. Europe is the continent with the highest population density, which means that the population lives closer together per square kilometre than any other continent. North America is identified to the west of the world map in yellow. A common mistake students make is to refer to North America as just “America”. The continent of North America contains 23 countries and 22 dependent territories, so don’t assume it is just made up of the USA. South America is situated to the “South” of North America and marked in Green. Again a common mistake students make is to confuse North and South America, so ensure you check the compass rose situated at the bottom left hand corner of the map to get the right orientation. South America contains 12 countries and 3 dependent territories. Africa, coloured in brown, contains 54 counties and is often confused as a country in itself. It is a fast developing continent with a massive variety of climates and landscapes. If you were to travel around the continent you would experience a lot of different environments. Asia, marked in orange, is the largest and most populous continent with 48 countries and 4.4 billion people. Russia is the largest country by landmass with China having the largest population. Oceania, seen here in blue to the South East, contains areas such as Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. All these areas combined make up 14 different countries which includes thousands of small islands. Finally Antarctica, to the south, which is the least populated continent with no permanent residents and about 98% of its land covered by ice. There are several countries that have claimed territories in Antarctica, including the UK, but it is a shared area. The Antarctic Treaty designated Antarctica as a scientific preserve, established freedom of scientific investigation and banned military activity. There are 5 main oceans of the world. These can be sometimes divided into North and South orientations.
