Before we get too into it, cookbook authors used faraway places in their naming of dishes and sandwiches for a variety of reason. One could argue the Japan Sandwich from “101 Sandwiches” of 1901 was because Japan relies on seafood and the main ingredient is oysters. But given how many other sandwiches have names with foreign locations in them yet have zero tie back to that cuisine or culture, I’m inclined to say it’s the authors indulging in exoticism. Basically trying to plus up the name to make it sound more alluring. Unfortunately for Japan today’s sandwich is…very much not alluring. At all.
