Super cyclone Amphan has hit, and has already started its carnage in West Bengal, Odisha, and surrounding areas. At 2.30 pm today, the landfall happened. Two women and one infant have lost their lives because of this. Amphan is the Bay of Bengal’s fiercest cyclone this century, because it has sustained wind speeds of over 270 kmph. Odisha has evacuated over 1.5 lakh people, and West Bengal has evacuated over 3.3 lakh. Traffic movement has been stopped in several parts of West Bengal, electricity supply has been cut off in certain districts after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued orders. Visuals of the impact show how trucks have been toppled over, buildings have begun to shake, parked cars are being moved by the wind, and lighting has struck several places. The Indian Navy has been put on high alert. The central government is coordinating efforts with the NDRF to ensure that the damage can be minimized.
