Handel used tone painting to accentuate important textual elements such as on the word “shake” in the bass recitative. The Messiah Part 1 corresponds with the Advent and Christmas seasons, and with the prophecy of the Messiah and his virgin birth. (Haggai 2:6,7; Malachi 3:1) “Yet once, a little while, and I shall shake the heavens, and the earth, the sea, and the dry land; and I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come. The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts”
