Are you aware of the hidden power of flexible intent vs rigid goals? Have you made a New Year’s resolution, or set business goals? By the end of February about 80% of those are already abandoned or off track. But it doesn’t have to be another year of, “Oh well, I tried.” And unfortunately, iron-clad resolutions and goals may be sabotaging your chances for success. Let me explain. When people set goals, they tend to be rigid, all-or-nothing goals that usually fail. And when they do fail, they have the opposite effect of what you wanted. Most people believe rigid goals show commitment. This mindset creates an all-or-nothing trap that leads to failure and self-doubt. Business leaders set annual goals for their company, which is good. But if the goals aren’t realistic and don’t provide for unforeseen events, the team won’t buy in. So many people abandon their goals by February because of one misstep or missed day that made them feel their entire plan was ruined. Their rigid thinking destroyed all their momentum and enthusiasm. Positive intent, coupled with your resolutions and goals, provides flexibility that allows things to happen while you keep moving forward. And moving forward is really what you want. New plans are about intent and direction, not perfection. They’re also about going easy on yourself. Here’s three steps you can take to get moving with your goals and resolutions without the fear of failure: Be Realistic - If you don’t totally believe in your resolution or goal, your chances of hitting them are slim. I’ve seen this in business hundreds of times. Do a Check In - Each week do an intent review. Look at your progress and simply adjust your approach without judgment. There’s plenty of judgement to go around already. Don’t YOU put yourself on the list. Start a Success Journal - Write down your daily wins and displays of determination, no matter how small. It will reinforce your efforts, when you’re doubting yourself. So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: Have you made a New Year’s resolution or set your business goals for the year? Take another look at them. Are you allowing for anything but perfection? Look where you can replace the all-or-nothing goal with flexible, positive intentions. Then, write the second version allowing for missed days, events that are out of your control, and what progress would look like for you. For example, you could set a goal to grow your company 50%. But 40% is pretty good. Maybe you want to lose 50 pounds. But 40 pounds isn’t bad either. Give yourself a break this year. Success comes from consistent progress, not being perfect. When you replace your rigid resolutions with positive, flexible intent, you create sustainable growth that keeps you on track, purposeful, and happy.
