By Jerry Askin NewsChannel 9 has obtained surveillance video from an Athens gas station where a truck slams into the business, hauling off an ATM they stole from the business. It happened early Sunday morning at the Marathon Gas Station on North Congress Parkway. It's something you'd likely see in a movie. All within seconds, the video shows a white van slamming into the gas station, two men get out, aiming for one thing - the ATM. Then, they drive off. The store manager hopes the surveillance video will help catch the people responsible -- and Tuesday she spoke only to NewsChannel 9.With the start of the New Year, Sunday's early morning scare has Jenny Watkins even more concerned about her safety.I just hope they catch them, says Watkins.Hoping they catch him is her wish, but for customers we spoke with, they hope those responsible will get jail time. You do the crime, you do the time. You wanna play, you gotta pay, says John Thomas.Thomas shops at the convenience store several times a week. And, watching the surveillance video, he can't believe this sort of thing can happen so close to home.Hard times fall on everyone, but it doesn't mean you have to steal... That's pretty sorry. They're going to have to fit the bills for this, says Thomas.Watkins says she's grateful no worker was in the store when this happened, but this is a first for her.I was mad because I've worked in these stores for almost 9 years and this is the first time it's happened to me that I've been broken into, says Jenny Watkins. But, she says with the new year, out with the old...and in with the new.Workers don't know how much money was inside the ATM. If you have any information --- call Athens police at 423-745-3687.
