Blood in your stool can have many causes, including: Hemorrhoids Swollen veins in the anus or rectum that can be painful, itchy, and sometimes bleed. Bright red blood is a common sign of hemorrhoids. Anal fissure A tear in the lining of the anus that can cause bright red blood on the surface of your stool. It's often caused by passing a large or hard stool. Colorectal polyps or cancer Growths in the colon or rectum that can cause blood in your stool. If left untreated, polyps can turn into cancer. Esophagus problems Blood in your stool can come from the esophagus, which is the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. This can be caused by GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), a tear in the tissue, or swollen veins from liver disease.
