Local body elections: ECP fiercely defends neutrality of polls, denies rigging claims KARACHI/HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) assured on Monday that the results of the local government elections in Karachi would be completed by evening after multiple parties alleged that rigging was ongoing to deprive them of their mandate. The allegations were levelled by Jamat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after hours of delay in results that showed Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Hyderabad in pole position and was leading in the provincial capital. So far, results of Karachi's 89 union committees (UCs) have been released out of 246. PPP leads with victories on 46 UCs, JI has secured second place with 22, PTI 14, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) three, Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam (JUI-F) two, while Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) and an independent have one won seat each. PTI suffered a majore setback in Karachi local bodies polls when Khurram Sher Zaman — who was considered the party’s candidate for the top slot of the mayor — lost to PPP’s Najmi Alam in Saddar.
