October 26, 2025 - (Vatican News / Camino Católico) "Jesus gives us a powerful message: we are saved not by flaunting our merits, nor by hiding our errors, but by presenting ourselves honestly, just as we are, before God, before ourselves, and before others, asking for forgiveness and trusting in the Lord's grace." This is the instruction of Pope Leo XIV in his address prior to the Angelus prayer on Sunday, October 26, before tens of thousands of pilgrims in St. Peter's Square. Reflecting on the Gospel passage from today's liturgy, which presents two figures, a Pharisee and a tax collector, the Pontiff emphasizes that the former "boasts about a long list of merits" and therefore "feels better than the others, whom he judges with contempt." With his presumptuous attitude, he "denotes an exact observance of the Law, yes, but poor in love," "devoid of mercy." After reciting the Angelus prayer, looking out of the window of his study in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, Pope Leo XIV expressed his affection and solidarity with all of Mexico, which was hit nearly two weeks ago by violent rains that caused flooding and a massive humanitarian disaster: 80 people died, dozens are missing, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
