MaximsNewsNetwork: 20 April 2010 - UNTV, United Nations, New York - United States Ambassador Susan E. Rice today (20 April) announced her county's intentions to conduct a formal review of the United Nations (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples following New Zealand's recent announcement supporting the Declaration. Susan E. Rice, who spoke in the General Assembly hall, also mentioned that the recent US health care bill includes important provisions to reduce the gaping health care disparities that Native Americans still face. On the UN Declaration, she said tribal leaders encouraged the United States to reexamine its position on the Declaration, an important recommendation that directly complements our commitment to work together with the international community on the many challenges that indigenous peoples face. The landmark document outlines the rights of the worlds estimated 370 million indigenous people and outlaws discrimination against them. The US was one of four countries other than Australia, Canada and New Zealand that voted against the Declaration in 2007. Australia reversed its decision last year and New Zealand signed on to the Declaration yesterday (19 April). ...............................
