Derry pub crawl — 12 historic pubs in Northern Ireland's most fascinating city, walking every stop inside the famous 17th-century walls. From the Bogside to the Diamond, this Northern Ireland travel guide takes you through a city shaped by history, culture, and legendary craic. This historic place is famous for its 17th century walls that encircle the old city centre, and this route passes through them several times. Named the UK City of Culture in 2013 it has a young, vibrant arts and music scene and many of the pubs in this route host live music and dancing. Although officially called Londonderry I have decided to refer to it throughout this chapter as Derry. Not as a political statement, but after spending time gathering opinions from the people who live there and run the pubs. Its sad history during the Troubles saw some of the most heated clashes, including the Bloody Sunday massacre. But despite this still being reasonably recent history the pubs along this route were some of the friendliest I have visited. I especially enjoyed the final stretch along Waterloo Street, where I would place O’Loughlin’s (and it’s Wee Bar) amongst one of my very favourite spots.
