Legislative Council President Andrew Leung rounds up term

(28 Oct 2021) Hong Kong Legislative Council President Andrew Leung concluded the current turbulent term of the local assembly on Thursday, which has seen democrats ejected or resigning. He said the local assembly worked more efficiently without the opposition.   Beijing is revamping the election system to make sure that only "patriots" can take part in governance, with the definition of a "patriot" up to the Hong Kong and Chinese Communist Party authorities. The legislature will be expanded from 70 to 90 seats, when the current term of the Hong Kong Legislative Council will end on October 30. An upcoming Legislative Council election will be held on 19 December and the new council term will begin on 1 January 2022. In 2020, mainland China imposed a sweeping National Security Law in Hong Kong following months of massive anti-government protests, under which more then 120 people have been arrested, many of them supporters of the city's democracy movement. Dozens of political organizations and trade unions have ceased operation out of concern for their members' safety under the security law, with human rights group Amnesty International being the latest to say it will close its two offices in Hong Kong this year.
