How do your unconscious biases affect the way you treat patients with substance use disorders? In this eye-opening lesson, Dr. Ariel Sloan walks through the science of implicit bias in clinical settings, using a vivid case study and real-world data to show how race, pain perception, and assumptions can influence care. Learn practical strategies for identifying and counteracting bias to ensure more equitable treatment for all your patients. ðŊ What Youâll Learn: Define implicit bias and explain how it affects clinical decision-making Reflect on how race and identity shape provider perceptions in addiction care Describe specific tools to uncover and reduce personal bias Understand the impact of stereotypes on treatment planning and patient trust Explore how increased self-awareness and emotional regulation can reduce biased care ð About the Course This course is designed with a singular goal: to improve the care you provide to your patients with substance use disorders. By delving into a model case performed by actors, seven Yale instructors from various fields provide techniques to screen your patients for substance use disorder risk, diagnose patients to gauge the severity of their use, directly manage treatment plans, refer out to treatment services, and navigate the various conditions that may limit your patientâs access to treatment. You will ultimately be prepared to provide compassionate and evidence-based care to a large population of patients living with addiction â a chronic, often relapsing-remitting disease, but a treatable one.
