Hurricane Irma batters Caribbean, killing at least four

The Category 5 storm has already left a trail of devastation as it bears down on Florida. Lee Jeong-yeon reports. Hurricane Irma is continuing to tear through islands in the northern Caribbean. The Category 5 storm, packing winds of over 300 kilometers an hour, is chewing up almost everything its path, destroying buildings, flooding low-lying areas and causing mass power outages. At least four people have been reported dead on four different islands, including Barbuda, where the island's Prime Minister said more than 90 percent of buildings have been flattened. Irma is currently lashing the coast of Puerto Rico... making its way towards the Dominican Republic, where authorities are urging residents to take shelter. Puerto Rico's Governor said the region is already experiencing significant damage,... adding that the storm is like "nothing experienced before." Florida is also bracing for impact with officials calling for evacuations ahead of the hurricane's expected landfall there this weekend. (English) "We are preparing for Irma to directly impact our state, and while it's still too early to tell exactly where this storm will hit, it is incredibly important that all Floridians keep a close eye on this incredibly dangerous storm. Do not sit and wait to prepare. Get prepared now." The storm first hit Antigua and Barbuda early Wednesday, local time, before moving over St. Martin and Anguilla and parts of the British Virgin Islands. Adding to the potential for even more carnage and suffering, Hurricane Jose is following the tail of Irma in the Atlantic, and Hurricane Katia has also formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. It marks the first time since 2010 that three hurricanes have been active in the region at once.
