U.S., Russia see little progress during security talks in Geneva

Washington pushed back on Moscow's demands describing them as "non-starters,"... but Russia vowed there would be no escalation of tensions with Kiev. Kim Hyo-sun has more. The U.S. and Russia made little progress on Monday narrowing their differences during their highly-anticipated security talks in Geneva. Despite huddling together for nearly eight hours,... the two countries remain far from reaching an agreement on each other's security concerns. During the talks,... which Russian officials described as difficult, long, but very professional,... they underscored Russia has no plans to invade Ukraine. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister also said that, despite Moscow highlighting the need to see some flexibility from NATO,... the U.S. did not provide such an assurance. "I don't think you will expect me saying otherwise and to confirm that this is one of the areas we have the greatest difference with the US. The US suggests that there is no way that Russia or whoever else may ever say on these type of issues, but we underscore that for us it's absolutely mandatory to make sure that Ukraine never, never ever becomes a member of NATO." U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman stressed that no one will be allowed to undermine NATO's open door policy,... adding Washington will not forgo bilateral cooperation with countries that want to work with the U.S. Both sides remain pessimistic on expectations for a diplomatic breakthrough.
