Catholic TV Mass Online August 21, 2022: 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Presider: Fr. Mark Payne Parish: Chaplain, Heart of the Nation Choir: St. James TEXT FROM THE HOMILY This particular gospel calls us to accountability but also to be authentic. To be our authentic selves. When the person calls in and says, "Hey, we ate with you, we drank with you. We know who you are." and the Lord says, "I do not know who you are." means he has caught us where we're not truly authentic about who we are, what we believe, what we share what we bring to the people around us. Do we live the gospel? Are we living it? Are we following the commandments? You know, sometimes it gets a little edgy out there. Seriously! We're called to be authentic followers of Jesus and do we live that out? When I taught in the high school, I gave an example of this. I said, authenticity comes from the heart. It can't be faked. Then I put 4 wine glasses in front of them. And I said, “See the glasses? Are they all the same? And they all looked at them, they examined them. And they said, "yes, they're all the same!" I said “No, they're not. Two of them are different in a very special way.” I said, “Do you know what crystal is made out of?” And they all looked at me and I said, “Originally, crystal had lead in it. So when you took the two crystal glasses and you clanged them together there would be a ring that would last forever. You could hear it. And then you took the glass, the glass and you clanged it, it clanked, clank, clank." You see, the lead is what gives it a true ring. It's within the glass. Oh I all looks the same. So do we. We all look the same. But the authenticity is found in the heart. So Jesus is going to call us to accountability. Are we living our faith? Do we put that faith in action? Because you know as we grow older and we keep moving in a certain direction we're asked to be his disciples. To live out that discipleship in among the people and folks do we ever need true authentic disciples today. In a world that is full of darkness and a world that wants to turn away from the church and God we need to be those disciples that will go out and make a difference. Preaching his true word. Living it. Not just talking about it. But living it. So today Jesus calls us to our authentic self. Do we live out the gospel? And let others know that? And you know sometimes living out the gospel doesn't mean we're going to get a pat on the back. No. Sometimes we may be ostracized, we may be shunned, we may be made fun of. Oh those Christians. Oh Catholics. I'll tell you something. I’m going to be part of that group. If I’m shunned or I’m pushed aside, if I’m living an authentic life of following Jesus then I’m not going to be out in the darkness saying, "Hey, do you know who I am?" The Lord will say to those who live an authentic life, "I know exactly who you are." Let us stand and profess our faith. Entrance: Table of Plenty © 1992, OCP. All rights reserved.
