Welcome back to the channel! 🙏 Today’s video is all about the New Laxman Jhula in Rishikesh, the replacement bridge that is being built after the closure of the iconic old suspension bridge. If you have ever been to Rishikesh, you know how special the original Laxman Jhula was – connecting Tapovan with Jonk across the holy River Ganga. Unfortunately, the old bridge became unsafe and was officially closed in July 2019. But don’t worry – a brand-new modern bridge is under construction, often referred to as the Bajrang Setu, which will not only replace the old Laxman Jhula but also add new experiences for visitors. In this video, I’ll show you details of the new bridge, why the old one was shut down, its history, construction updates, design highlights, and when you can expect it to open. 🏞 History of Old Laxman Jhula The original Laxman Jhula was a suspension bridge across the River Ganga in Rishikesh. Built in 1929, it quickly became one of the most iconic symbols of Rishikesh and a spiritual crossing point believed to be where Lord Laxman once crossed the river using a jute rope. For decades, it served as a pedestrian-only bridge, carrying countless pilgrims, locals, and tourists. Due to excessive load and aging infrastructure, engineers declared it unsafe. In July 2019, the bridge was closed permanently for safety reasons. 🔧 The New Laxman Jhula (Replacement Bridge) The government of Uttarakhand decided to build a new, stronger, and more modern bridge right next to the original location. The new bridge is known as Bajrang Setu, a glass-fitted suspension bridge, making it the first glass floor bridge in India. Length: 132.5 meters Width: 8 meters Design: Suspension bridge with toughened glass flooring at both ends, offering breathtaking views of the Ganga below. Purpose: Mainly pedestrian traffic, with limited access for light vehicles in the middle section. This bridge aims to blend safety, spirituality, and modern tourism appeal – giving visitors the thrill of walking over a transparent glass floor while also carrying forward the legacy of the old Jhula. ⏱ Construction Timeline & Budget Work started in January 2022 with a sanctioned budget of approx. ₹69.2 Crore (INR). Initial completion target: July 2023. According to reports, over 60% of the work was completed by mid-2023, but there have been delays in opening. As of now, the new bridge is still under construction and opening dates depend on final approvals and finishing. ✅ What’s New & Why You Should Visit Glass Flooring Sections – Toughened glass fitted sections allow you to see the Ganga flowing beneath your feet.
