Thirty years ago, my first TV news anchor position came my way in January 1989 when I was hired as a weekday morning and Sunday evening anchor at KIEM-TV, the NBC affiliate in Eureka, CA. I anchored the local cut-ins during the 7-9 a.m. hour of NBC's "Today" show and the station's Sunday evening newscast. Also reported during the week. It was a lot of work for little pay, but that's what needed to be done at the beginning of my career. Looking back, I never complained, worked hard to earn my stripes and learned as much as I could. it was a very rewarding experience.
