https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damaged...) “Police Story” is from Black Flag’s ‘Damaged’ album, their debut full-length and first release to feature Henry Rollins. It’s a wicked record, an audial shot of adrenaline that I’ve treasured for many years and has become a benchmark for hardcore punk. Although I enjoy it and all of the various incarnations of BF, this is meant more as a tribute to Henry. I suppose I could’ve chosen a Rollins Band tune (anything from ‘Weight’—another terrific record—would’ve been big fun), but Rollins himself has stated that he wouldn’t be where he is hadn’t he been given a chance to sing with BF. And given this is his debut with them, thus is my decision. This is something I’ve wanted to do for years but couldn’t due to various obligations. I tracked this just before the new year and, appropriately, donned my Rollins ‘Half Animal / Half Machine’ tee. He had a massively positive impact in my adolescence, influencing me to abstain from drugs and generating an interest in lifting weights. In a way, he inadvertently helped raise me. To this day he’s a hero of mine, with an ever-evolving mindset, an insatiable curiosity about the world, and an unrelenting work ethic. As stated, this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I always envisioned what this would sound like with absurd linear/quasi-linear fill-ins during the guitar noodles and other assorted wackiness. I vaguely recall beginning to write parts for this while on tour with Sky Eats Airplane—yes, that long ago, heh. At some point I revisited it and decided maybe I should just wing it and play through extemporaneously. However, after this most recent examination, due to the breakneck tempo and Ginn’s wild, adventurous guitar noodles (which leads into random odd time territory (was that intentional? who knows)), I decided to pick up where I had left off years prior and finish writing parts. The tempo, being a factor in my decision, actually doesn’t float too much; Robo is quite sturdy! It sits at an average 220 BPM. I made a custom click and noted the tempo changes in the chart. Thank you, Henry.
