HP Officejet Pro 8630 - Crashing the printer by trying to use the ADF before it's ready

One fun glitch I've found with the HP Officejet Pro 8630 (and likely other models of similar vintage): If scanner initialization gets interrupted for whatever reason during startup, e.g. by trying to running an ADF service test, the machine crashes with an error. The error code is 007C9C98. No lasting damage is done, though; the printer operates normally once it's restarted.
