Korea for Reported Nuclear Test --------------------------------------- CAPTION: President Bush demanded stiff sanctions on North Korea Wednesday for its reported nuclear test, but said the U.S. has 'no intention of attacking' the reclusive regime. (Oct. 11) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] (NK file) As the US continues trying to confirm North Korea's claim that it conducted a successful nuclear test this week (Bush cut, walking to Rose Garden podium) President Bush is again issuing a warning. SOT: (President Bush 1:38 into opening remarks) "In response to North Korea's actions, we're working with our partners in the region and the Security Council to ensure there are serious repercussions for the regime in Pyongyang." (file of nuke facility, scientist doing his thing) The president is calling for a strong security council resolution, that will call for north korea to live up to its own international commitments to dismantle its nuclear programs. SOT: President Bush (2:12 in)"This resolution should also specify a series of measures to keep NKorea from exporting nuclear technologies......help develop its nuclear capabilities." (NKorea street scenes, people milling) The president is making it clear the U-S won't attack North Korea, but says it will abide by its security obligations to Pyongyang's neighbors while keeping open all options. (Security Council file) He says the diplomacy has to be global..and multi-lateral. the president is rejecting calls for the U-S to give in to North Korea's request for one-on-one talks... (another cut of either him at Rose Garden newser or media) ...noting during a Rose Garden news conference that's the kind of diplomacy his State Department is usually taken to task for. SOT: President Bush (14:22 in) "I can remember the time when it was said the Bush administration goes it alone too often in the world, which i always thought was a bogus claim to begin with. And now all of a sudden, you know, people are saying the Bush administration ought to be going at it alone with North Korea, but it didn't work." STANDUP: The president says the way to go about this diplomacy is to have several nations speaking with one voice, neighbors like South Korea and China. in his words, one has a stronger hand when there are more people playing your same cards.
