The Last Words Of Jesus Christ Palm Sunday 2009 April 5, 2009 ~ Luke 19:29-40 Luke 19:29-40 (NIV) As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? tell him, The Lord needs it. Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt? They replied, The Lord needs it. They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher, rebuke your disciples! I tell you, he replied, if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out. As He (Jesus) approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it and said, If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyesbecause you did not recognize the time of Gods coming to you. Luke 19:41, 42, & 44b (NIV) As they led Him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A large number of people followed Him, including women who mourned and wailed for HimTwo other men, both criminals, were also led out with Him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified Him, along with the criminals—one on His right, the other on His left. Luke 23:26-27, 32-33 (NIV) While Hanging On The Cross Jesus Spoke Of 1. Forgiveness: Father, forgive them" But Jesus was saying, Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing. Luke 23:34 (NASB) The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also mocked Jesus. He saved others, they scoffed, but He cant save Himself! So He is the King of Israel, is He? Let Him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in Him! He trusted God, so let God rescue Him now if he wants Him! For He said, I am the Son of God. Matthew 27:41-43 (NLT) 2. Hope: "You will be with me in paradise" One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: Arent you the Christ? Save yourself and us! But the other criminal rebuked him. Dont you fear God, he said, since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this Man has done nothing wrong. Then he said, Jesus, remember me when You come into your kingdom. Jesus answered him, I tell you the truth, today you will be with Me in paradise. Luke 23:39-43 (NLT) 3. Care: "Woman, behold your son!" When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said* to His mother, Woman, behold, your son! Then He said* to the disciple, Behold, your mother! From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. (John 19:26-27 (NASB) 4. Loneliness: "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?—which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Matthew 27:45-46 (NIV)
