Despite being located in beautiful natural surroundings, many temples are not well known to people. One such temple is located in Davje village near Sinhagad, called Swayambhu Neelkantheshwar Temple. This temple was established in 1962. The temple is located on a hill, so devotees have to climb 2 to 3 kilometers on foot. Still there is a large crowd of devotees. It is said that the forest guard and Shiva devotee Shankarao Sarje alias Sarjema was the chief trustee of this temple. In the year 1962, when he was working as a forest ranger in the Neelkantheshwar hill forest, Lord Shiva appeared to him in a dream. Lord Shiva said that I and my Nandi are buried under the ground at a special place on this mountain, take me out. After this Sarjemama dug the said place. There they found Nandi and Lord Shiva's Shivlinga. They took him out and made him respectable by law. This is why this temple is called Swayambhu Neelkantheshwar, said temple servant Dinkar Shinde. Sarjemama also did many good works for the society. He launched the liquor liberation campaign here, through which around 2 lakh 56 thousand people were freed from alcohol addiction, said temple servant Shinde. Because of this, the temple is called Swayambhu (self-manifested) Nilkantheshwar Temple, according to temple caretaker Dinkar Shinde. Sarjemama also did many good works for society. He started an alcohol de-addiction campaign here, through which about 2,56,000 people were freed from alcohol addiction, as shared by caretaker Shinde.
