History of King Cakes | LSWI Segments | 2/14/25

Louisiana is abundant in culture, history, and tradition, with the King Cake being a distinctive holiday custom that dates back to the 1800s. King Cakes have their origins in France and Spain, influenced by the Spanish tradition of balls held on Twelfth Night. This custom gained popularity in New Orleans around 1870 and has been integral to Mardi Gras culture ever since. In this segment, LPB’s Dorothea Wilson visits Elouise Market in Baton Rouge to delve into the history of King Cakes and learn how we can create our own King Cakes at home. Louisiana: The State We're In LSWI is Louisiana's only statewide news magazine. The program airs Fridays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 4:30 p.m. on the six-station LPB network that includes stations in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe, and Shreveport.
