Microbiota Transfer Therapy for Autism

Microbiota Transfer Therapy (MTT), where the microbiota of a healthy volunteer is transplanted into the gut of a recipient with an infection that is refractory to treatment by conventional antibiotics. This therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for a number of gastrointestinal conditions. More recently it is being trialled as a treatment for diabetes and autism. Here I review a study in which 18 autistic children with moderate to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, were treated with Microbiota Transfer Therapy. The results showed that not only did the therapy significantly improve the gastrointestinal symptoms of these children, but they also improved on all the autism symptom ratings. Autism spectrum disorder behaviours correlate directly with the severity of gastrointestinal symptoms. These behaviours have been shown to be significantly decreased by Microbiota Transfer Therapy. However, even more amazing is that these autistic children continued to improve 2 years after the initial treatment.
