John finds Uncle doing what he does best—absolutely nothing—under a tree. After some classic Uncle wisdom about reincarnation (which John quickly shuts down), they discuss getting a barn for the ranch. Uncle suggests buying a pre-cut barn, so they head to Albert Cakes in Blackwater. John picks out a barn, but when they try to secure a loan at the bank, the banker Ansel Atherton refuses, clearly annoyed by Uncle’s antics. Just as John is yelling at Uncle (again), Sadie Adler appears and offers him a dangerous bounty job—the capture of Ramón Cortez, a wanted Del Lobo gang member. They track Cortez to Painted Sky, where Sadie unties a captive rancher, who reveals that Cortez is hiding in the barn. John gets ambushed, but after a brief struggle, he knocks Cortez out. Sadie smacks him with her shotgun for good measure, and they haul him off to Rhodes for the bounty. At the Rhodes Sheriff’s Office, Cortez keeps trying to bribe everyone, but no one’s buying it. Sheriff Thomas plans to transport him to Saint Denis for execution, and Sadie and John agree to guard him overnight, just as dawn breaks, the Del Lobo gang attacks, demanding his release. After an intense shootout, an explosion rips through the jail, allowing Cortez to escape. Sheriff Thomas, unwilling to pay unless Cortez is recaptured, agrees to increase the bounty. Sadie and John track Cortez to a campsite, where they take out his gang and force him back to shore after he attempts a boat escape. With Cortez tied up again, they battle the remaining Del Lobos before finally delivering him back to Rhodes. The sheriff loads Cortez into a jail wagon bound for Saint Denis, promising their payment upon arrival. Before parting ways, Sadie thanks John, and he asks her to send his share directly to the bank, because a barn doesn’t buy itself.
