Gesture - Conveying an emotion

Gesture - Conveying an emotion

THIS VIDEO: The word gesture is thrown about in photographic discussions, but what does it actually mean. The definition refers to an action that conveys a feeling. But for this discussion, I’m going to extend its meaning to include any visual element or group of elements that sparks an emotional response. So, this could be a physical act, a movement or a bend in a tree branch. For me something becomes a gesture when it prompts a feeling. Even the bent leg of a table may remind one of instability or ageing. Photographers have a lot to gain by becoming aware of gesture and understanding what it says about ourselves and others. As a photographer, you are already operating in the domain of gesture – possibly the factor that makes all of your successful images work - is that they contain a spark that communicates emotion. Gesture is what elevates a picture above the ordinary - It reflects some human quality that is conveyed through to the unconscious. 1-on-1 MENTORING: https://graemewilliams.co.za/mentor-p...
