Zelensky Prepares for High Stakes Europe Talks, Announces Major Frontline Reforms

MetroTV, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that "some issues can only be discussed in person" ahead of a week of high-stakes talks with European leaders as he outlined 'extremely important' changes to frontline staffing and deployment in a video address on Sunday. "We are starting a new diplomatic week right now – there will be consultations with European leaders. First and foremost, security issues, support for our resilience, and support packages for our defence," Zelensky said, adding that air defence and long-term funding will be central to the agenda. Zelensky will meet with Emmanuel Macron, UK PM Sir Keir Starmer and Germany's Friedrich Merz in London on Monday. It came as Donald Trump claimed Zelensky 'hadn't read' the latest version of the peace plan. Zelensky noted that Defence Secretary Rustem Umerov and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov were travelling to Europe after 'substantive discussions' with US envoys and would brief him on "everything that was said to the American envoys in Moscow, and on the nuances the Americans are prepared to modify in negotiations." "Ukraine deserves a dignified peace, and whether there will be peace depends entirely on Russia – on our collective pressure on Russia and on the sound negotiating positions of the United States, Europe, and all our other partners," the Ukrainian leader reiterated. Turning to domestic military reforms, Zelensky announced, "I approved an extremely important decision for combat brigades on the front line: regarding the distribution of personnel, regarding people reinforcing brigades, and regarding the expansion of training for new recruits directly within the brigades." The remarks come after last week's US-Ukraine talks and subsequent discussions between US envoys and Russian officials in Moscow, amid reports that a planned follow-up meeting with Zelensky in Brussels had been dropped. Zelensky is also embroiled in an ongoing corruption row that has seen the departure of his closest aide, Andriy Yermark, and two government ministers. Trump described the Moscow talks as 'very good' last week.
