Once an area with art spaces and music venues, over the years the culture has been replaced by luxury apartments and stores. If you can stand the crowds, it's can be a more convenient place to shop or have a bougie brunch than Soho or Fifth Ave, and because of this, New Yorkers often call Williamsburg a mini-Manhattan than a part of Brooklyn. Brooklynites often look at Williamsburg as an example of what's to come for the rest of the borough, and you can already see the reach of gentrification into Bushwick. Like the area of Dumbo, it can feel a bit like a Disney version of Brooklyn. Still, if you can stand the crowds, the mural advertisements, and increasing amounts of luxury stores, the area still has its charm in its tree-lined streets and waterfront views of the Manhattan skyline (where nannies often gather with strollers midday). I often turn around to gaze at the towering buildings of glass and wonder what kind of job you need to have to afford to live there, which is something I find myself thinking more and more on my walks through New York City.
