In the first round Vidit was up against the head coach of Magnus Carlsen, Peter Heine Nielsen while B. Adhiban took on David Navara. While Vidit faced some issues against Nielsen, he overcame the challenge with a score of 6.5-4.5 while Adhiban lost his match to Navara with the same margin. However, Adhiban took home the bragging rights as he beat his opponent in just 9 moves using 1.b3.
