The Original Veloster showed its funky face in 2011 and was fairly unremarkable. However, you were probably pretty unremarkable when you were young too. Now, though, the Veloster is in its second generation and grown into its quirky 3 door body. It also hit a growth spurt in the performance department. This is the Veloster N which means it’s the most powerful and aggressive Veloster you can buy. Under the hood we have a turbo charged 2L 4 cylinder making 275HP and 260 lb ft torque. When the Veloster N originally came out a couple years ago you could get it watered down or youcould get the full potency performance pack with boosted power, brakes, etc. Now, though, full potency is the only way you can get it. All the power gets sent to the front wheels through a limited slip differential which manages traction and torque steer...as best it can. manual transmission is standard but new to last year’s model, the 2021, you have an optional 7 speed wet DCT which has an overboost function that can temporarily increase your torque from 260 to 278 lb ft. And they have a funny name for it, NGS or N Grin Shift Names aside, we’re interested in what that results in... So How does all this this translate to its driving dynamics 0 - 60 in the DCT is done in about 4.8 seconds which is a few tenths quicker than the manual which will get you to 60 in about 5.1 seconds Power is right there on demand...as long as you keep it above 3000 rpm to keep that turbo spooled. All the way dialed up in N standard you’ll have a very stiff, very sportscar feel from the car. The brakes are strong on corner entry, the chassis and suspension is stiff mid corner, and as you roll on the power through corner exit watch out for a little torque steer, but the power is there. And then dialed back into eco mode the car relaxes and is much more liveable day to day. The Veloster N give you the ability to customize virtually all your driving dynamic inputs including throttle response, the adaptive dampers, the limited-slip diff, the selectable engine rev matching, the stability control, the steering weight, and the exhaust note. We set our own custom N mode which we felt the car was at its best for the road with everything turned up except the suspension left one notch down and traction control in sport rather than full N where it turns traction off Since its inception in 2019 the exterior hasn't changed at all (colors?) and thats ok because it looks fantastic for a 3 door hot hatch. Some of the cool exterior features include: trunk release, 3rd break light, 3rd door release, the carbon end plates on the wing, and the red body accents I mean, it looks the part, doesn’t it? The interior is unchanged from 2021 but its worth mentioning the agressively bolstered sport seats are lighter than the ones they replace in 2019 and they do a better job at keeping you stable and secured in your seat. a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and upgraded touchscreen infotainment software. Driver-assistance features including forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring are newly available. Wired apple car play Leather really only on the steering wheel ? lol A gripe some people may have over the competition is that there's a lot of plastic in here and there is but its a hot hatch, not a luxury sedan, at least it has all of the new tech features. Although the rear view camera looks like a video from the first razor flip phone. So there it is. The Hyundai veloster N. The first car to bring the N brand to the Hyundai lineup. As a hot hatch it strikes on all fronts. It has the aggressive looks, it makes great noises, and behind the wheel it’s a riot. The only fault we could find was the torque steer on throttle - something that gives us a new appreciation for how the Civic Type R manages to get rid of that. Speaking of the Type R, it’s not exactly a competitor to this. The Veloster N slots in between the Si and Type R from a power and price perspective and does the same with the GTI and Golf R and WRX and STI Ultimately, the Veloster N comes together as a great bang for your buck and you can really tell that the guy that used to run BMWs M division has made his mark on these Hyundai N cars. If it were me, I’d be happy to have a pale blue Veloster N in my garage each morning….
