For the first time for Opera Queensland, the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation made it possible to take Moving Opera! to Longreach for two weeks during Term 2, 28 May to 8 June, 2012. Unique to Opera Queensland, Moving Opera! is a popular and successful in-school residency program delivered to primary and secondary school students throughout Queensland and other states. The workshops explore music theatre and opera processes and techniques, and provide excellent opportunities for both individual and ensemble development. Schools in the Longreach District were offered the opportunity to attend the workshop (one-day workshops were offered to smaller schools outside of town and a one-week workshop to schools in town). Participating schools included Longreach State High School, Longreach State School, Our Lady's School, Longreach School of Distance Education, Ilfracombe State School, Isisford State School, Aramac State School, Barcaldine State School, Jundah State School, Windorah State School and Stonehenge State School. The residency culminated with a concert presentation at the Qantas Founders Outback Museum for the students' peers, family members and the general community, providing a wonderful opportunity for participants to showcase their achievements. Students were also able to perform alongside Opera Queensland artists!
