INEC Launches Voter Registration Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched its Continuous Voter Registration exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections. Within the first seven hours of the nationwide rollout, over 69,000 Nigerians had already pre-registered online — a figure that continues to rise rapidly. INEC is urging all eligible citizens to take part, with the online portal now live and physical registration set to begin on 25 August 2025. The Commission has also issued a strong warning against multiple registrations, stressing that violators will face legal consequences. News Central speaks with Yetunde Bakare from Yiaga Africa and political analyst Liborous Oshoma to unpack the impact of this process, public response, and what it could mean for voter turnout in 2027.
