Global energy crisis intensifies as demand surges

중국에 이어 인도도 전력난…'에너지 대란' 확산 우려 Recent events have shown there's still a level of reliance on fossil fuels. China has been going through an energy crisis for months due to a coal bottleneck. And now, India is suffering a similar fate. Kim Sung-min delves deeper into this issue. Amid the ongoing energy shortages,... China is reportedly releasing Australian coal from bonded storage despite Beijing's unofficial ban on coal from Australia. Reuters cited traders based in China on Wednesday to report that some of the Australian coal stuck at Chinese ports has started to be released,... although some had also been diverted to other markets like India. The source added that this is from an estimated one million tonnes of Australian coal which had been stuck in bonded warehouses... after the ban was imposed following an international dispute. This comes as China scrambles to ease a nationwide power bottleneck. In fact, the energy crisis is stretching across the world,... with India becoming the latest country to suffer a coal shortage. According to India's power ministry,... as of last Friday, the country's 1-hundred-35 thermal power plants had an average of just four days of coal supplies left. While there are several reasons behind this,... surging global coal prices, pushed up by China's aggressive moves to secure energy, left utility companies unable to purchase sufficient stock. Coal from Indonesia in particular, one of India's major suppliers,... rose to over 1-hundred-50 dollars per tonne in September. While South Korea also depends quite a bit on fuel energy, an expert says that,... although South Koreans could receive higher electricity bills due to higher global energy prices,... the possibility of power outages seems low. The expert added however that the global energy crisis does give an important lesson to all countries. "South Korea is trying to steer away from coal in a gradual process so it might not be the same case exactly. But the lesson here is that risks increase when a country relies too much on a single source of energy. So it definitely shows the importance of diversifying the sources. And this is in line with the government's efforts to increase the portion of renewable energy." The South Korean government has pledged to be carbon-neutral by 2050.
