The clashes started when members of a larger group of leftist demonstrators tried to approach the rally. Police tried to separate the two groups, as the opposing protesters attempted to beat each other with sticks. Hundreds of right-wing demonstrators from northern Europe had gathered in the Danish city of Aarhus to hold a rally against what they called the Islamisation of Europe. The rally began with a moment of silence for the seven people who were killed by al-Qaeda-inspired gunman Mohamed Merah in France. Saturday's "European Counter-Jihad Meeting" was organised by the Danish Defence League - an anti-Muslim movement claiming to have no Neo-Nazis ties. It drew participants from several European countries, including Britain, Germany, Poland and Sweden. About 300 people took part, according to a police spokesman. Nearby, a much larger group - about 2,500 people - marched in a counter-demonstration, under the banner "Aarhus For Diversity". Participants included communists, anarchists, left wing groups and anti-racism campaigners.
