In 2011, the small Spanish village of Sodeto became famous when almost every resident won the country’s Christmas lottery, known as El Gordo. The local women’s association had gone door to door selling tickets, and nearly the entire town bought shares of the same number. When that number was drawn, the whole community suddenly found itself celebrating a huge fortune. Families who had struggled with the financial crisis were lifted overnight, and the village was filled with joy. But there was one exception. A Greek filmmaker named Costis Mitsotakis lived on the edge of the village. By chance, the ticket sellers never reached his home, so he was the only person who did not buy a ticket. When the winning number was announced, every neighbor around him cheered and collected their prize, while he had nothing. Although Costis missed out on the money, he turned his experience into an opportunity. He began recording the celebrations and later created a documentary about how sudden wealth changed the town. In the end, while everyone else received money, he gained a unique story that made him just as memorable as the winners themselves.
