The games were announced on February 26, 2016, during a Pokémon Direct broadcast in honor of Pokémon's 20th anniversary. The Alola region is a completely new region introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon and is based on Hawaii. A major feature of the region is that it is a chain of islands. Alola is centered around five islands, one of which is artificial and the other four are natural. The natural islands are called Mele-Mele, Akala, Ula-Ula, and Poni. The artificial island is Aether Paradise, the private island of the Aether Foundation. Alola has a warm climate and tropical flora, as evidenced by the palm trees in the region. The region is also said to be home to many rare Pokémon, and some even give rise to regional forms that have adapted to the climate and conditions of the region. Each of the four main natural islands has its own patron Pokémon and its own Island King, who is chosen by the patron. Furthermore, Island Wandering is one of the most popular customs among the inhabitants of the Alola region. During this custom, the seven captains who live in the region must complete tasks and defeat the four Island Kings. Once you have completed this, you are allowed to move on to the next island. Island Wandering essentially replaces the Pokémon League, which can be found in the other regions. Nevertheless, there are plans to build one on Mount Lanakila in the Alola region. The tropical climate and rare Pokémon also attract many tourists to Alola. For example, during the course of the adventure, it's possible to encounter familiar characters from other regions in the Alola region.
