CINCINNATI (Paula Toti) -- It's the gift that just keeps giving this holiday season: low gas prices. With crude oil down 40 percent since summer people might think the price of more than just gasoline should drop. At a coffee shop in Madeira the owner hasn't noticed fuel surcharges on deliveries dropping but also feels they've been pretty reasonable. Customer Alfred Beasley was optimistic about seeing a fuel decrease ripple effect. Some Local 12 viewers have noticed an actual increase in the fuel surcharge Rumpke put on the December trash bill. The reason was diesel fuel hasn't dropped as much as crude oil and the trash hauler actually saw an uptick in the price in December. Rumpke did make small downward directions in charges in September, October, and November. When it comes to the super huge user of fuel, the airlines, jet fuel is dropping in price. But most carriers have purchased fuel months in advance at higher prices. Experts also say don't look for ticket prices to drop anytime soon or even surcharges because demand is high and airlines can get their prices. Mark Raithel flew back to the U.S. thrilled to see gas prices in the tri-state so low. He's also hopeful about a ripple effect, "I'd like to think fruits and vegetables. The surcharge we get with those with transportation, but time will tell." And it will. A company that makes connections between truck drivers and suppliers needing transportation says most long haulers have been hit by new regulations in recent years that have increased costs. A drop in fuel costs at current levels is just a chance to catch up. Experts say there is an adjustment period after the kind of price decline that has been seen so it is hard to say how things really will shake out. Local 12 talked to a company that delivers water and they said years ago they were too quick to drop a surcharge. When they did, things quickly jumped up again. This time they are waiting until gas is below $2 a gallon. If people are wondering why diesel fuel is so much higher than gas right now it has to do with all the things they might expect
