It is also called as Bird's Triangle of Safety or Incident Ratio Study or Safety Pyramid or Green Triangle of Safety. Frank Bird revealed that for every ONE serious, or disabling injury reported, there were TEN injuries which required medical attention only, there were THIRTY property damage incidents and there were SIX HUNDRED incidents where NO visible injury or damage took place. In referring to the 1 / 10 / 30 / 600 ratio it should be remembered that this represents accidents & incidents reported, not the total number of accidents / incidents that actually occurred. Quite possibly there were many more which were not brought to the attention of management. This ratio study would seem to indicate quite clearly that it is meaningless to direct our total effort to the relatively few events terminating in serious or disabling injury. The fact is that there are 630 property damage or no loss accidents / incidents for every 11 injuries, indicates that there is a much larger basis for more effective control of the total loss due to accidents. If the number of accidents / incidents is reduced than the losses & injuries will be reduced proportionately.
