In this Baltimore Black History fact, a Black woman who boldly broke barriers. As a teacher and mother of four, Violet Hill Whyte of Carrollton Avenue, in Baltimore, wasn't who most would think to become a police officer. But she changed the image of what protecting and serving looked like. On Dec. 3, 1937, she became the city's first African American police officer. While refusing to carry a gun, Whyte earned her nickname "Lady Law" by working countless 16-hour days. For 30 years, she worked tirelessly improve the juvenile justice system and protect the young people of west Baltimore.
