In the aftermath of the rave explosion, techno toughened up. Tempos got faster, arrangements became more minimal, drums took centre stage, and compressors started to become the main tools for crafting satisfying 909 bangers. A repetitive, high-powered aesthetic designed for mixing. If I were to define the essence of techno, this would be the style I'd use. Proper. I really enjoyed going back to playing some vinyl for the deep house mix, so decided to dig out some more records for this one. This time it's a mixture of vinyl and CDs, which opened up the opportunity to try and get three tunes into the mix every now and then. The mixing is a little raw in places, but what's the point of playing techno if you're not going to have fun with the tracks and take some risks? Aim: always be in the mix. When going through the archives, I found enough tunes I'd classify as power tools to warrant two mixes. An upcoming sequel of techno from 1998 to 2003 is planned. Tracklist -------------- 01.
