Ex-PM Cameron: May 'worked very hard' for UK

(24 May 2019) Britain's former prime minister David Cameron has said he feels "desperately sorry" for Theresa May following her resignation announcement earlier on Friday. Cameron, who called the referendum on Brexit in 2016, said he knows what it feels like "when you come to realise that your leadership time has finished" as he too resigned from the role of prime minister. "It's extremely difficult and painful to step outside Downing Street and to say those things," he said. He praised May for her work as prime minister, saying she "worked incredibly hard on our behalf" and that he believes she deserves gratitude for that. Cameron also criticised MPs who didn't back May's Brexit proposal. "Ultimately the people who most wanted Brexit in the end wouldn't vote for it," he said. May will step down as UK Conservative Party leader on June 7 sparking a contest within the party to choose Britain's next prime minister. When asked whether he thought Boris Johnson would be a good candidate, he said that he didn't want to "get involved at all in the Conservative leadership race" but that he would "do what I can to help and support them to deliver a good outcome."
