The Last of Us Part I follows Joel, a hardened survivor, as he escorts a teenage girl named Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States ravaged by a fungal infection. Ellie is immune to the infection, and a resistance group called the Fireflies believes she holds the key to a cure. Along their journey, Joel and Ellie form a deep, surrogate father-daughter bond. After finally reaching the Fireflies, Joel learns that creating the cure would require Ellie's death. Unwilling to lose her, he kills the Fireflies and rescues Ellie, lying to her about what happened.
