"Press Your Luck," Hosted by the charismatic and affable Peter Tomarken, was created by Bill Carruthers and Jan McCormack. The Whammies were captivating, yet pesky, little creatures that brought an unexpected twist to the game, luring contestants with the allure of big prizes only to leave them with nothing. The Genesis of the Whammies: As "Press Your Luck" was in the early stages of development, Bill Carruthers and Jan McCormack sought to create a visually appealing and suspenseful game that would captivate the audience. Their brainstorming sessions led them to devise a unique element that would add excitement and uncertainty to the game. Inspired by the concept of "bad luck" and the mischievous nature of classic cartoon characters, they created the Whammies - whimsical, animated creatures meant to represent misfortune. Designing the Whammies: Before directing Better off Dead and One Crazy Summer, Savage Steve Holland worked on the show and was tasked with animating the Whammies. As he told Collider: “I was asked by the producer, Bill Carruthers, to invent a 'bad creature that stole people’s money.' I drew something on a napkin and the producer said ‘that’s it.’" While Holland animated the Whammies, it was Carruthers who provided the voice. Nearly 80 Whammies: Throughout the show's run, a total of nearly 80 Whammies were created to ensure a wide variety of animations and reactions. Each Whammy featured its own distinctive personality and mischievous antics, making their appearances unpredictable and delightful for the audience. From a Whammy dressed as a vampire to one disguised as a pirate, the creativity in their designs added an entertaining touch to the game. The Impact of the Whammies: As "Press Your Luck" premiered on television screens in 1983, the Whammies quickly became a standout feature, contributing significantly to the show's success. Contestants were well aware of the risks posed by these pesky creatures, and the tension in the studio soared whenever a player landed on a Whammy space. The Whammies' hilarious and sometimes heartwarming animations entertained viewers of all ages, cementing their status as iconic characters in the realm of game shows.
